I’ll give you twenty.
Here are 20 DANGEROUS ingredients that are found in packaged foods — even “organic” packaged foods that are supposedly “healthy”!
Found in Silk products, So Delicious products, and a whole bunch of supposedly “healthy” milk substitutes like almond milk, soy milk, and coconut milk. This is considered an “organic” ingredient and is in health foods.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: Joanne K. Tobacman, M.D. is a professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She’s published 18 peer-reviewed studies that link carrageenan to harmful effects on the human body, such as stomach problems and inflammation and cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. This ingredient is harmful and could cause a number of diseases. STAY AWAY FROM IT!
Found in “low fat” chip products and french fries, this ingredient is a substitute for cooking oil and was developed by Proctor and Gamble.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: It robs your body of its ability to absorb vitamins and can induce cramps. It’s banned in the U.K. and Canada. Say no to fast food and chips, everybody!
#3. Brominated Vegetable Oil
This is found in sports drinks and other colorful beverages and is generally used to stop carpets from catching on fire. Does that REALLY sound like something you want to put in your body? It’s found in sodas like Mt. Dew, Gatorade, and more.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: Banned in over 100 countries but NOT the U.S., brominated vegetable oil is linked to the causation of birth defects, schizophrenia, organ system damage, hearing loss, and growth problems. Fun, right?
#4. Hydrogenated Oils of ANY Kind
Certain oils, like olive or coconut oil, are relatively healthy in small amounts. But the hydrogenation process turns oils into poisons by heating them to high temperatures and then cooling it quickly so that it leaves behind solid fat.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: This solid unhealthy fat left over after the hydrogenation process is terrible for you, and can cause all sorts of health problems. Run! Run far away!
#5. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
HFCS is EVIL! EVIL EVIL EVIL! There was a marketing campaign a few years ago that was trying to give HFCS a good name by saying that it was “totes natural you guyz” when in the end HFCS is made in a lab and is cheaper than sugar.
Even worse, HFCS is found in a ton of food, from ketchup to cereal to even BREAD. *screams* *tears out hair*
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: HFCS causes weight gain, hypertension, diabetes, insulin resistance, and is made from genetically modified corn.
#6. Asparatame (AKA: Equal, NutraSweet)
If it’s a sugar substitute, kick it to the curb! These things always say “oh yeah we’re natural and SO much better than sugar!” and then a few years later — surprise! They cause cancer. These sweeteners are found at restaurants, in your sodas, in chewing gum, and all sorts of other sneaky places.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: It’s a multi-potential carcinogen — even when consumed at 20 mg per kg of your body weight, which is far less than the maximum consumption rate that the FDA recommends.
This is going to be a shocker to you guys, since it certainly was for me. Soy products — soy oil, soy milk, all that jazz are actually NOT a health food. Unless soy is FERMENTED and ORGANIC, stay away! Most soy oils and whatnot you find in processed foods are neither of those, and are dangerous.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: Soy messes with your hormone levels, and could impair fertility in women and lower sex drive. It can cause an imbalance in omega 3’s and omega 5’s fatty acids, and can cause early puberty in children.
This is a hard one to swallow, so do a google search to learn more about the dangers of soy on your own. Trust me, it’s a rude wake-up call, but it cutting it out of your diet could drastically improve your health.
#8. Potassium Sorbate
Found mostly in ice cream, potassium sorbate is championed by the food market as healthy. Sadly, no amount of marketing dollars can change the truth.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: A known carcinogen, toxicology reports show that this ingredient causes cell mutation in animals. AVOID!
#9. Potassium Bromate
This is an ingredient that makes bread cook faster, and is found in many cheap baked goods.
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: Potassium bromate is a carcinogen and has been linked to nerve system and kidney damage.
#10. Artificial Food Dyes
Oreos, colored foods, breakfast cereals, macaroni and cheese — so much of our food is dyed these days
WHY IT’S DANGEROUS: Are pretty breakfast foods worth brain cancer and nerve cell deterioration? Not really. Because most dyes are derived from petroleum, they are incredibly bad for you. Stay away from artificial coloring and dyes of all sorts!
