- Pick you color palette. I can’t wear bright orange. I have tan olive skin, so it just doesn’t look right. But when my fair-skinned brunette friends wear orange, the color complements them nicely. This rule is all about personal preference, but most people gravitate toward the colors that suit them. Blondes look best with light blues and pinks, brunettes look best in dark purples and blues (my colors of choice!), and redheads look best in bright greens and whites. Keeping this in mind as you shop helps give you a point of reference if you can’t decide between two different colors of the same top.
- Know your shape. Pear shapes look best in a-line skirts and snug tank tops, and apples look best in tunic tops and skinny jeans. Hourglasses benefit from something that shows of their waistline, and those lacking curves can benefit from loose clothing with empire waistlines and clothes with a more tailored look. As a rule, wear snug fitting clothing to show of your best features, and looser clothing to leave something to the imagination.
- How tight is too tight? Skintight skinny jeans are best paired with a loose, long top. A tight shirt and impossibly short shorts might show a little too much, depending on your style. Leave something to the imagination! When people have to fill in the lines for themselves, their minds often overestimate your best features.
- Use accessories! In the lovely silhouette above, this chic has used a belt to gather up a loose dress, giving her a defined shape. Clothes can definitely be too loose, and that’s why belts are awesome. Scarves and long jewelry offer a unique texture to an outfit, and can help draw eyes toward desired features.
